On May 10, 2023, Wofford College's Community Sustainability Seminar held an "End of Year Grant Pitch" event at the Bethlehem Center. This event provided student volunteers from various community-based programs an opportunity to pitch funding proposals to a panel. Programs included STEM Clubs, Queens Clubs, CHEFS Clubs, Leadership Clubs, Afterschool Programs, and more.
Spartanburg Housing was awarded first place and a grant in the amount of $1,250 for its Determined Minds Afterschool Program. The program, which has sites at Camp Croft Courts and Prince Hall Apartments, provides homework assistance, tutoring, arts and crafts, special events, and field trips.
Spartanburg Housing worked with the students to develop a proposal that demonstrated the impact of partnerships and sustainability. In addition, a description of programming which is intentional and aims to improve academic performance, social development, and positive outcomes through adulthood.
The Determined Minds Afterschool Program was also awarded the Public Housing Communities Honor Roll by The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading for having a significant impact on reading through community partnerships.
